Here is a
New Year's Lesson Planner, these would make great activities, topics and lessons for the month of January!

Next week is our
Three Wise Men bible lesson, and I thought I'd put up a page with some helpful links to various free resources on the web. You'll find free lessons, crafts, songs, activities, printables and more for a Three Wise Men theme...... and if you want to share more links just leave them below!

I hope the rain/snow slowed down for you. Staying healthy? Hope so. We are doing our best to do just that.
It must be so cool to live in such a historic city. I've never left the west coast (yet!) and would love to see all those amazing sites where America's history began.
I have to say WOW! Your dd can sound out her abc's at such an early age. Way to go, mom! :) Sounds like you are really looking for what will suit her learning needs/style best. That is the right way to go imo. Teaching to read can be a very intimidating idea. If she's sounding out out abc's already and has that down, you could move on to little blends or 3 letter words. One thing I learned the hard way was not to push before my kids were ready and to let them go at their own pace-which was often much slower than I would have liked, but the LORD always is teaching me :)
The book list for Before FIAR and FIAR is on their website under the "order" tab. You could check to see by the titles what might be more interesting to your dd. The Before lessons are only 3 days a week and more preschool age themes. Its' a very gentle approach and lots of parents use letter of the week along with it. Check out the message boards on fiarhq.com, sometimes just reading what other moms are asking gives you an idea of if it will work for you.
FIAR is a bit more advanced- The language arts and art might be a little over a 3 year olds head, but you can always cater it to her level.
With FIAR you have to add your own reading and math curriculum each day because it doesn't provide that. I also spent one day each week getting printables ready-like a flag to color, or tracing pages, because the lesson plans don't have that stuff. But they have great lessons and ideas for art, and creative ideas for making the story come to life at home, which was what I loved.
Our local library carries a similar lesson plan curric. to FIAR, perhaps yours does too?
HTH, and just drop me a note if this is all too overwhelming! I tend to ramble on...

Greetings from Pittsburgh. It was snowing all day but now its raining...go figure!
Thanks for writing back and all of the great info! I am SO overwhelmed with hs curriculum. I have been researching for a year and still haven't made up my mind what I'm going to use.
My dd LOVES books. I think she is ready to read but I have no idea how to teach her! She keeps asking me what certain words say...is she too young? She turned 3 in Jan. Also, I have been using www.letteroftheweek.com when she was about 2 1/2 and we are just about done with it. Would Before Five In a Row be better or should I skip to Five in a Row? My daughter can identify all upper and lower case letters, can sound them out and can identify 1 thru 20 (she can count verbally up to 30). So, what do you think? Any advice would be appreciated. We love to go to the library and we get new books each week so curriculum that is book based would probably be best.
Thanks again for writing back and look forward to hearing from you!
Yep, those babydays fly by WAY TOO stinkin' fast. I miss the days when my littlest sat in her swing and was content. Now she's 2 and trying to get on the monkey bars like her big sis.(yikes!)
We use a few different sources for homeschooling. For the basics right now-math & phonics, we use Abeka. I like it because it's well organized and all planned out-a life saver! It has games, charts and lots of enrichments. I was lucky and scored a ton of items in one lot on www.vegsource.com/homeschool.
We do alot of unit studies for history, science, Bible. I mainly glean from the library and online sources for those, and put it together on my own.
One curriculum that I absolutely love especially for younger kids like yours is Five in a Row. www.fiarhq.com
It's a literature based curriculum and you focus on one main subject each day. They use classic childrens books to do a unit study. We did volume one last year and it was the most fun we had. This year we're doing lapbooks instead of Five in a Row, but you can easily lapbook any of the books in it. I highly recommend it if your kids love stories and learning from them.
Ok, that was quite a novel, but I so love sharing about books, teaching and kids! :) I hope that wasn't too much rambling for you. Drop me a note anytime.
Blessings,
Jasmine
I'm always chuckling when I see your baby on your back.....what a cutie! Any plans for Thanksgiving?
btw- Do you ever go by Nat?
Valerie
We don't have any special curriculm for Bible time right now. hmm....maybe I better work on that, lol! I read to them Bible stories and we're going through the Bible. We started with Creation in Sept. and we make lapbooks for each story. It's been fun. I also have book we're going through on Christian character (loving others, repect, telling the truth, etc) that has activities and projects. I really want to instill in my kids that they have to LIVE their faith and not just know it in their head, kwim?
As for hs. advice...I think you're doing exactly what you should be doing. Learning right along with your kids :)
I love to see parents with a heart for their children-not just their education, but their well being, their morals, their spirit life, all the parts that get clouded by the world. Keeping your hs journey wrapped in prayer is probably the most important thing hs parents can do.
blessings!!

Nice to *meet* you here, and have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Anyway, as far as homeschool goes, I'm only comitted to the next couple of years....in stone, but I'm am heavily considering more.....It's such an abstract idea for me, I don't know one person who was homeschooled (besides online), I have no idea where to start, so right now I'm just doing what I can to teach her. My children don't have any learning difficulties (Praise be to God) , It's just a new concept to my life. I've only recently considered it, and it's definitly a option (where as before I'd never even dream of considering it!...probably even laughed at the idea!)
You know how everyone grows up (well us girls anyway) with the rest of our lives planned out ....you know, I'll marry at 28, have my first child at 30, the second at 32, I'll take a few months off for maternity leave, and then back to work at the Research Clinic where I'll finish up my doctoral degree, and start my career....we'll start our family ranch and the kids will enter private school at 5 at which point I'll juggle parenting and soccer mom,...yada...yada.......
You know, plans for your life. Lol.....
Here's reality.....
Pregnant and Married at 20 (yes 8 years early! lol) Maternity leave went from 3 months to, "Yeah boss, I'm not coming back, sorry!", Doctorate turned into, "I'm so glad to have finished my BA" and Private School is slowly turning into, "Maybe We could homeschool for a couple of years"
I guess with all the changes in my life I'm a bit worried about adding another, for worries that I have not prepared enough to do 12 years of homeschooling! A lot of it is fear, and some of it selfish desires to have some free time.... "I want some time alone to just catch my breath"
I don't see any negatives to homeschooling as far as for the children, just want to make sure I am mentally prepared to take on the task and the job I commit to do. So right now I am comitted to very little. I commend you on your decision to go all the way! I wish I could be as certain as you one way or the other! lol
God Bless,
Valerie

(ha ha just made that up!)
I will work on my profile page hopefully this weekend.
As far as homeschooling, I believe I will hang in there until high school. It's a huge committment but I know the Lord wants me to stay at home. I'd love to hear why you might not hs after Kindergarten as I haven't started yet and would like to know more of the disadvantages.
I just loved your pumpkin folder presentation and wanted to comment on it. I am new to this blogging thing and this is the first one I have joined besides cafemom and meetup. I look forward to chatting more!

Welcome to the group! If you need any help setting up your profile page, just let me know! Please introduce yourself in our forums so that we can get to know one another more.
btw-Cute baby, is that your 11 month old on your back? I bet your hands are full (joyfully full) of your little ones! We wanted ours to be that close in age, but God had other plans :) Mine are 4 1/2 and 2 so they're still close enough to be having similar interests. I'm still deciding wether or not I want to homeschool (past preschool/KG) but for now were giving it a shot!
Hope to get to know you more!
God Bless,
Valerie
